Information for martial arts masters

In the January 2003 issue, we wrote the article “Evaluate Past Success & Seek Continued Growth.” Since then, we have seen a lot of growth and distraction. We would like to review the article again and refocus on your training.

Recently, we have noticed that most of the schools are growing in their martial arts philosophy, curriculum, sales and marketing. Adult classes are increasing, the quality of schools are increasing, and the trend this year is one of growth. This has been wonderful for the martial arts industry and we would like to encourage you all to keep up the good work and continue to put your best foot forward for the future. With your continual dedication to practicing and teaching the martial arts, you are making the industry stronger than ever!

Some schools have been distracted by other activities in the past. For these schools, we would like to encourage you to take a look at your current situation and plan ahead so that you may get back on track. This is a reminder that it is time to focus on business, personal training, developing stronger curriculums, sales strategies, etc. Sometimes we lose sight of our original plan, but it is never too late to find that focus and redirect your attention to those things that will help your school grow. Your school and your students depend on you to provide the best service.

As a martial artist, your main focus should be on martial arts. In order for your school to prosper, you must focus on what you know the best and what you know the most about. There are three main areas that need your concentration: continual self-training, strong curriculum with a main focus on martial arts studies, and marketing strategies that target retention as well as new sales. Be sure to build a strong and reputable school of which you can be proud.

When your students see that you are not just watching but that you are also participating, then they are directed to realize the importance of continual training. Also, when you continue your training, you can offer a better service to your students. Remember why it is that you decided to run a martial arts school, and don’t let go of your passion for the martial arts studies. With continual training, you strengthen your skills and you strengthen your knowledge in the area of teaching. By taking the time to enhance your skills through continuous training, you are putting a valuable investment into yourself as well as your school. Keep up with your training for yourself, your school, and your students.

Next, you must concentrate on the curriculum of your school. Keeping your classes organized and structured is key to the learning process for your students. If a student is constantly moved around or jumping from one area of expertise to another then he/she is not getting the full benefit of your school. Keeping the curriculum strongly tied to traditional martial arts studies is essential in this business. Traditional martial arts classes are still around because they are what people want to learn, and because they precede all other studies that you may encounter in modern martial arts classes. Following fads and trends is not the way to build a strong clientele, because when the fad or trend wears off then the student becomes bored and quits. A strong marital arts curriculum will help you grow.

Finally, you must concentrate on your sales and marketing skills in order to retain current students and bring in new students. This is one area that you definitely cannot afford to lose focus. Without good marketing and people skills, the best instructor in the world couldn’t build a strong school. Look for what your students want, need and enjoy, and then find a way to give them what they need to feel a part of your school.

When your students see that you are training, that the curriculum is strong, and that your business is doing well, then they will want to be a part of your school. Keep in mind to continue doing what you do best—martial arts training. We are very sure that your school will continue to grow as long as you do.
